Make Your Workplace A Safe Place

How are Safe Places chosen?

A Safe Place should:

  • Be a GLBT business, venue or organisation OR
  • Be a business in an area with a high GLBT population or having a significant clientele from this community.
  • Have street frontage (to display the Safe Place sticker)
  • Be easily accessible from the street
  • Be able to offer a commitment from all staff members to the program

If you believe your business fits the criteria you can contact the AVP or your local ACON branch. Even if your business or organisation does not have a large GLBT clientele but you’d like to become a Safe Place please talk to us.

What is my business committing to?

A Safe Place indicates that GLBT people experiencing any homophobic trouble are welcome to seek support from your business. This could include:

  • Calling the police or ambulance
  • Providing comfort
  • Providing a phone for them to call friends or family
  • Providing  a space for someone to wait for emergency services or until the threat is gone

We also ask that you let us know after someone has called on you for support.

Do you think ACON should start referring to our community in line with international practice and use the acronym LGBT?:
