HIV positive Gay Sex

HIV Positive Gay Sex
3rd Edition

AFAO (Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations) has produced the resource HIV Positive Gay Sex to engage with HIV+ gay men, and to a lesser extent HIV- gay men within Australia regarding issues related to HIV sero-status and sero-sorting, gay sexuality and sexual contact, and the issues around the transmission of HIV and sexually transmissible infections (STI's).

In addition, the booklet aims to provide information and advice to HIV+ gay men regarding a range of psychosocial and social impacts of HIV, update gay men regarding the current legal requirements regarding HIV disclosure and avoiding transmission of HIV to others, and provide a sex-positive approach to dealing with issues of sex and intimacy for HIV+ gay men. Through the use of direct quotes in the booklet, the direct experiences of HIV positive gay men are reflected.

This resource is a reprint of the popular 2002 version under the same title. It has been updated to reflect recently emerging issues such as the ‘Swiss Statement', reinfection and super-infection, and the sexual transmission of hepatitis C.

The booklet adopts a more sex-positive style through the use of large-format photos of men in intimate contact, reflecting feedback that shows greater impact and effectiveness of HIV education materials where sexually explicit imagery and language is used.

The resource is available at all ACON outlets within NSW, or downloaded below.

Risk Reduction Strategies Gay Men’s HIV Prevention 2010-2012

Risk Reduction Strategies
Gay Men’s HIV Prevention 2010-2012

To ensure that HIV prevention, knowledge and practice within the NSW HIV sector reflects the current research and sexual practices of gay and other MSM, ACON and Positive Life NSW have devloped a paper on Risk Reduction Strategies.

  • Consistent condom use is the most effective strategy for preventing HIV transmission and acquisition, and is particularly important with casual partners;
  • Social research indicates that the majority of gay men consistently use condoms with casual partners;
  • Evidence shows that gay men’s engagement in risk practices is influence by a complex range of factors including, circumstance, partner, substance use and mental health, and salience of HIV as a health threat, epidemiological and virological evidence; and
  • Targeted prevention messages should therefore acknowledge complexity, context and incorporate information regarding the evidence base for risk reduction strategies to promote informed decisions.
