African Women’s Day

African Women’s Day was establishedin 2009 as a result of some funding provided by Abbott Pharmaceuticals, and in partnership with The Lemon Grove Unit & Parramatta Sexual Health of SWAHS, Heterosexual HIV/AIDS Service of SSWAHS, and the Women & Families Affected by HIV Project of ACON.

African Women’s Day occurs on the first Friday of every month. The group meets in a tranquil and secluded setting in Greater Western Sydney. The women meet for morning tea from 10am, have a guest speaker address specific issues that are relevant to their needs, followed by a wholesome cooked lunch finishing up around 2:30pm.

Some of the guest speaker sessions covered topics include:

  • Legal Issues
  • Treatments and supplements
  • Immigration applications & issues
  • Physical health and nutrition
  • Accessing service providers who provide assistance
  • Positive Speakers Bureau

This has been a very successful group and continues to go from strength to strength. The success of the group has been attributed to the participants extending a warm welcome to one another, as well as ensuring one another’s privacy. The members of the group come from diverse African nations and cultures, demonstrating tremendous courage and strength, leading to a strong feeling of connectedness in a confidential space that allows for sharing.  All activities and meals are free.
