Services
Information + education
We run lots of fact-based campaigns and distribute a range of resources to educate our communities about important health issues while encouraging them to make healthier life choices. We promote our messages in both the community and mainstream media, conduct regular workshops and forums, and distribute safe sex packs and information at clubs, pubs and community events. We also lobby all levels of government on relevant health and social issues. And we post heaps of information and resources right here on our website.
Developing communities
Not everyone experiences the same access to or connection with a community. So we work with all kinds of people, groups and communities throughout NSW to support them in building the knowledge, skills and networks that can help improve their health and wellbeing.
Counselling
Our team of qualified and experienced counsellors offer one-to-one counselling for all members of our communities, especially people with, or affected by HIV. We also offer a referral service for people requiring specialist care as well as an after hours service and group therapy programs.
Enhanced primary care
For people with complex or multiple health issues, getting healthy can sometimes involve coordinating a range of treatments. To make the process easier, we help people with counselling, care planning and improved access to relevant services (GP referral required).
Positive health + treatments information
For people with HIV, we provide comprehensive information about living well with HIV including treatments, complementary therapies and dealing with side effects.
Home-based care
Through our Community Support Network (CSN), our trained volunteer carers assist people with HIV to live independently by providing practical home-based support and transport services.
Positive Living Centre (PLC)
Located in Surry Hills in Sydney, the PLC is a health promotion centre where people with HIV can take part in a range of structured programs, skills building courses, special events and social activities.
The Luncheon Club
Located in Waterloo in Sydney, The Luncheon Club is a health promotion centre where disadvantaged people with HIV can get free meals or groceries and develop new skills.
Housing service
We provide short-term accommodation for GLBT or HIV+ people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We also offer advice and assistance in relation to rental accommodation and public housing.
Vitamin service
We supply a range of vitamins and supplements at discounted prices to people with referrals from their GPs.
Anti-Violence Project (AVP)
Whether it’s on the street, in the home or at the workplace, we work closely with the NSW Police and local councils to reduce violence against members of our community. Report violence at (02) 9206 2116 or www.avp.acon.org.au. For information and support on same-sex domestic violence visit www.ssdv.acon.org.au.
Substance support service
We provide a range of free in-house GLBT-focused counselling and support services for people with problematic drug use.
Needle and Syringe Program (NSP)
We provide free clean injecting equipment to people who inject drugs. We also provide information on reducing harms related to drug use as well as referrals to treatment facilities.
ACON Rovers
This team of trained volunteers attend parties and community events to help people who may be experiencing problems due to alcohol and drug use.
Safe-sex packs
Every year, we produce over 200,000 safe sex packs for both men and women and distribute them throughout NSW.
Learning centre
With a broad range of books, journals and newspapers as well as free internet access, our libraries in Sydney and our regional offices contain a wealth of information about GLBT health and wellbeing with a strong focus on HIV/AIDS.
Quality improvement
We work hard to provide the best possible information and services to our clients and community. If you’d like to help us improve our service provision, you can take part in our annual client satisfaction survey or ask a staff member to provide you with our complaint procedure.
