Same-Sex Parent Families
Same-sex parent families continue to suffer both legal and social discrimination across the spectrum of family stages spanning from conception, birth to child rearing.
The Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby Inc report And Then The Bride Changed Nappies has found that up to 10% of gay men and 20% of lesbians are parents and that almost half of these parents had children from a previous opposite sex relationship.
The NSW Government does recognise same-sex de facto relationships, and has recently introduced formal legal recognition of the relationship between lesbians, gay men and their children.
The legal and social discrimination faced by many same-sex parent families and prospective same-sex couple parents holds a potentially detrimental impact on the health and well-being of the individuals concerned. This discrimination clearly demonstrates the inequity of protection and recognition faced by many families within the GLBT community.
